Short answer: keep a PCP clean, dry and filled with clean air. Wipe it down after use, store it with some pressure in the system, keep fill-port O-rings clean and protected, clean the barrel only when accuracy drops, and replace seals as wear items with the correct kit for your model. Leave regulator and valve internals to qualified service unless the manufacturer's instructions say otherwise.
PCP Maintenance Schedule
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every session | Wipe the rifle down, refit the fill-port dust cap, check that magazines are clean and turning freely |
| Every fill | Inspect fill fittings and O-rings for dirt or damage, fill slowly with dry air |
| When accuracy drops | Clean the barrel per the manufacturer's method, then re-test groups |
| As needed | Replace worn breech and fill O-rings, and check screws for proper torque |
| Per manufacturer | Inspect carbon fiber bottles according to their markings, and service regulator and valve seals |
Keep Moisture Out
Moisture is the number one enemy of PCP internals. Use a compressor with good filtration, drain separators as the manual instructs, and never fill with anything other than clean, dry air. FX's Impact M4 manual specifically warns that only dry air should be used.
O-Rings and Seals
O-rings wear over time. Our policy notes that certain O-rings and parts, such as breech O-rings, are considered routine maintenance and not warranty items. Keep spares and the right kit on hand:
- FX Complete Reseal Kit for Maverick / Wildcat MK3
- FX Complete Reseal Kit for Dynamic / King / Panthera
- FX regulator repair kit for Crown, Maverick, Wildcat and Impact (after serial no. 183534)
Check that the kit matches your model and serial range before ordering.
Degassing Safely
Some service, and some travel, requires removing all air. Follow your rifle's manual. For compatible carbon fiber bottles, the Saber Tactical Bottle Degasser and Valve Removal Tool Kit releases air through a central vent and accepts a 19mm wrench for valve removal. Saber notes that it fits valves with a side hole larger than 3.2mm, so confirm fit first.
Regulator Care
Regulators set your rifle's consistency. Adjust them only as the manufacturer describes. AEA's Elite and SF instructions, for example, say never to decrease regulator pressure while the rifle is under pressure. Degas first, adjust no more than a quarter turn at a time, and check results with a chronograph. AEA warns that over-adjusting can damage the regulator and void the warranty.
Barrel Cleaning
PCP barrels don't need cleaning as often as firearm barrels. Clean when accuracy falls off or when switching between very different ammo, using the method and materials your manufacturer recommends. Then shoot a few fouling shots before checking zero.
Storage
- Store indoors, away from humidity and temperature swings.
- Keep the fill port capped.
- Many manufacturers recommend storing with some air in the system so seals stay seated. Check your manual.
- Remove ammunition. FX advises never leaving the rifle with ammo in the bore.
- Use a case. FX King rifles ship in a hard case with custom-cut foam.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I service a PCP air rifle?
Do the basic checks every session and every fill. Replace seals when they show wear or leaks, and follow your manufacturer's service intervals for regulators and bottles.
Should I store my PCP full or empty?
Many manufacturers recommend storing with some pressure so seals stay seated. Follow your rifle's manual.
Are O-rings covered by warranty?
Our policy treats certain O-rings and parts, such as breech O-rings, as routine maintenance rather than warranty items.
Can I adjust my regulator myself?
Only as the manufacturer describes. AEA, for example, says to degas before decreasing pressure and to adjust in small steps. Incorrect tuning may not be covered under warranty.
How do I clean an air rifle barrel?
Use the cleaning method your manufacturer recommends, and only when accuracy drops. Re-check zero afterward.
Always follow the manufacturer manual, wear eye protection, and know your local laws before buying, carrying or shooting an airgun.
