Short answer: most PCPs are cocked by a bolt or side lever between shots. Semi-auto PCPs re-cock automatically so you can fire again with just a trigger pull. Pump-action PCPs cycle with a forend pump, like a shotgun. In our catalog, the Karma SLS and AEA SF Series switch between manual and semi-auto, and the AEA Megalodon and BinTac PA Series are pump-action PCPs.
Action Types Compared
| Action | How it cycles | Pros | Considerations | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bolt / side lever | Manual lever or bolt each shot | Simple, very consistent | Slower follow-ups | FX Impact M4, Karma EQ |
| Side lever plus semi | Switch between modes | Flexibility | More mechanism | Karma SLS |
| Select fire (bolt or semi) | Switch between modes | Fast follow-ups | Ammo sensitivity | AEA SF Series |
| Pump action | Forend pump | Fast, intuitive, good for big bore | Heavier rifles | AEA Megalodon, BinTac PA Series |
Semi-Auto and Select-Fire Options
Karma SLS (Side Lever Semi)
Karma says the SLS works as a side lever, and a push or pull of a switch puts it in semi-auto. It comes in Standard (16 in barrel) and Compact (12 in barrel) versions, both in .22 and .25, at 310 bar.
AEA SF Series
AEA's SF rifles are select fire, switching between bolt action and semi-auto, with an externally adjustable regulator and a baffled shroud.
| SF model | Barrel | Overall length | Air | Max fill | Published velocity (bolt action) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SF Compact | 10 in | 31 in | 255cc | 4500 psi | .22 up to 850 fps with 18.13 gr |
| SF Standard | 13 in | 35 in | 330cc | 4500 psi | .22 up to 950 fps with 18.13 gr |
| SF Sniper | 18 in | 41 in | 330cc | 4500 psi | .22 up to 1000 fps with 18.13 gr |
AEA lists magazines of 12 (.22), 10 (.25) and 9 (.30) shots. AEA also warns to use JSB standard-weight pellets (18 gr .22, 25 gr .25, 44 gr .30) and not to use Crosman pellets in the SF Series.
Pump-Action PCPs
AEA Megalodon
AEA calls the Megalodon a pump-action big-bore "shotgun" that shoots slugs. It comes in .35, .45, .50 and .58, with 15 or 22 inch barrels. Published energy ranges from 158 FPE (.35, 15 in) to 585 FPE (.58, 22 in). Max fill is 4500 psi. AEA warns not to dry fire the Megalodon.
BinTac PA Series .30
The BinTac PA Series is a regulated .30 caliber pump-action PCP with a 22 inch barrel and a 600cc reservoir at 310 bar nominal. It is listed at up to 120 ft-lbs, with 12-round magazines and optional 4500 psi or 7000 psi regulator variants.
Is Semi-Auto Right for You?
- Choose semi or pump for fast follow-up shots on pests, or if you like a tactical-style platform.
- Choose bolt or side lever for benchrest and the most consistent precision work.
- Check local rules. Some jurisdictions regulate airguns by action type or appearance.
